WhatsApp allowed to offer payments service via UPI in India

The National Payments Corporation of India on Thursday gave its permission to WhatsApp to offer payments services via the Unified Payments Interface in the multi-bank model. The decision ends a two-year wait for WhatsApp Pay, which has been operating pilot operations for Indian users. WhatsApp Pay joins apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and others offering payments via UPI.

To make payments through WhatsApp, users must first add a payment method by clicking on ‘payments’ from the three-dotted icon on homescreen. Users should select the bank and verify via SMS to set up UPI ID. To make payments, users should select the ‘attachment’ icon and select ‘payment’ from chats. They need to enter UPI PIN to complete the transaction
