Handling Sites with Limited Free Articles

Some websites offer a few free articles before showing a paywall. Often, this limit can be reset by clearing the site’s cookies.

  • Use the Add-on’s Button: For supported sites, click the ‘Bypass Paywalls Clean’ icon in your toolbar and choose the ‘Clear Cookies’ button.
  • Manual Clearing/Alternative Add-on: If the button isn’t available or doesn’t work, you can use your browser’s built-in tools to clear cookies for that specific site, or install a dedicated extension like Cookie Remover. Refresh the page after clearing.
  • Automation via Custom Sites: You can often automate this cookie clearing by adding the site to the ‘Custom Sites’ list (see below).

Advanced Features & Configuration

  • Adding Custom Sites:

    • You can configure the add-on to attempt bypassing paywalls on sites not included in the default list. Access this via the add-on’s ‘Options’ > ‘Custom Sites’.
    • Permissions: Enabling custom sites requires granting the add-on broader permissions to access website data. You can opt-in within the options or grant permissions specifically for the domains you add.
    • Configuration Options: For custom sites, you can try different tactics like removing cookies, masquerading as a search engine bot (Googlebot/Bingbot), disabling JavaScript, or setting a specific referrer (like Google or Twitter).
    • Android Note: Granting permissions for custom sites might not work as expected in Firefox for Android. In this case, consider using the alternative Bypass Paywalls Clean (custom) version, which requests the necessary permissions upon installation.
  • Excluding Sites:

    • If you subscribe to certain publications and want to ensure the add-on doesn’t interfere with your logged-in access, add them to the ‘Excluded Sites’ list in the Options. This also works for specific sites that are part of a larger group controlled by a single option.
  • Requesting New Site Support:

    • If a website isn’t supported, you can request it on the project’s GitLab issues page.
    • Before submitting, please check if a request already exists.
    • To help developers, try visiting the article in an incognito window via a Google search link, or try disabling JavaScript (e.g., using the uBlock Origin panel’s </> button) and note if either method works. Include these findings in your request.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Use with an Ad Blocker: This add-on pairs well with uBlock Origin. Consider adding filter lists like “Fanboy’s Enhanced Tracking List” for better results.
  • Check Site is Enabled: Make sure the specific website (or its group) is checked/enabled in the add-on’s Options page.
  • Potential Conflicts: If a supported site isn’t working, try temporarily disabling your ad blocker (like uBlock Origin) or other extensions to see if there’s a conflict.
  • Login Issues: Be aware that the add-on might log you out of sites it actively manages. Use the ‘Excluded Sites’ feature for your subscribed sites.
  • Keep Updated: Ensure you are running the latest version of Bypass Paywalls Clean.
  • Cookie Banners: To automatically handle cookie consent pop-ups (especially common in the EU), consider installing the I don’t care about cookies extension or adding filter lists like “Easylist Cookies” or the “I don’t care about cookies custom filter” to uBlock Origin. Note: Some sites require consent cookies for media playback.
  • Report Issues: If you encounter persistent problems, submit an issue on GitLab with details about the site and the problem.
